Strategy 24: Reuse and Redevelopment Program
Strategy Description:
Across the watershed there are vacant or underutilized structures which once housed factories or commercial businesses but now stand empty and present difficult challenges. These buildings may be historic structures or 1950-70’s commercial strip centers, office buildings, or industrial complexes. In most cases there are adequate utility systems and roads that serve the properties. There are some cases where environmental contamination related to the previous use raises special issues of action and liability. The region should take the lead to create the awareness of the value of these buildings to the community and to return these properties to a new and more productive use. It is important to relate the value of existing buildings and sites to potential marketers of these key buildings sites.
Key Components:
Although the exact steps in addressing these opportunities will vary by the specific property, the general steps in this process could include the following:
The program is applicable throughout the region.
Implementation:
The County Planning Office, with assistance from local municipalities and the CBICC, could take the lead in this effort.
Indicators:
Sources of funding would include federal
and state funding for reclamation of brownfields sites. The "awareness"
component would require little direct funding.
