Adventures in Conservation program... Traditional Mother's Day Wildflower Walk May 11, 2008 (Sunday) 1 - 3 pm Every year, ClearWater Conservancy shows its appreciation for the hardworking mothers of Centre County by taking them on a guided walking tour along the upper reaches of the Spring Creek Canyon. The hike takes place at a favorite local spot, “the Rock” off Rock Road near Houserville, and introduces you and your mom to the beauty of native wildflower species including wild columbine, jack-in-the-pulpit and rue anemone. The time together makes the perfect gift and is an ideal way to enjoy the spring weather! Now in its twenty-fourth year, the walk leads participants along a section of Spring Creek within the property of Rockview State Correctional Institution, by special permission. “This is a once-a-year opportunity to have bridge access to the limestone cliffs along a stretch of stream with a good diversity of spring wildflowers,” according to wildflower walk guide George Hildenbrandt. George and other volunteers from the PA Native Plant Society will be on hand to answer questions and point out special wildflowers. As a special treat this year, and to help handle the blossoming crowd we have been attracting in the past few years, we are adding two alternative walks from the same starting point. A group of walkers may join Bob Hazelton, a volunteer with the Centre County Historical Society, in a walk from the stream to the uplands to the Philip Benner cemetery. We are also offering a group walk downstream along Spring Creek to the Benner Springs Fish Hatchery for a special talk and tour by PA Fish & Boat Commission. This event will be held rain or shine. The walk covers sloping terrain and is recommended only for the sure-footed. Sturdy shoes and water are a must; cameras and binoculars are optional! All are welcome... not just moms! Call Jennifer Shuey at (814) 237-0400 or email jennifer@clearwaterconservancy.org for more information.
