State College, Pa., May 18, 2026 — ClearWater Conservancy staff, board members, and construction partners recently gathered at the future site of the Hamer Community Conservation Center to celebrate a major construction milestone: the topping out of the building’s mass timber frame.

As part of the ceremony, attendees were invited to sign and decorate the final beam before it was lifted into place by construction crews, a symbol of the collaboration and community spirit behind the project.

The new center’s design pays tribute to the historic barn that stood on the site for more than 100 years. ClearWater Conservancy initially explored reusing the original barn’s timber frame. However, after careful evaluation, the wood was determined to be unsalvageable for use in the frame. Instead, the new structure honors that legacy by maintaining the same footprint and post placements as the original barn. The wood will be used to preserve its legacy furthermore by creatively integrating salvaged and repurposed materials.

“Our goal isn’t to recreate history, but to capture the character of the original space – acknowledging its history while showing respect for the barn that once stood here,” said Allen Kachel, senior associate at Bohlin Cywinski Jackson.

Mass timber is central to the new building’s design, reinforcing ClearWater Conservancy’s commitment to sustainability while creating a warm, natural space for environmental education, exploration, stewardship, and community connection. Known for its reduced environmental footprint and aesthetic appeal, mass timber reflects an innovative approach to conservation-minded construction.

Throughout the process, ClearWater Conservancy has worked closely with engineers, contractors, and regulatory agencies to ensure the project meets the highest standards of environmental stewardship. By implementing best management practices during construction, the organization continues to advance its mission of safeguarding water quality, preserving habitats, and fostering spaces where people and nature can thrive together.

ClearWater Conservancy is partnering with Alexander Building Construction Co., part of the Butz Family of Companies, to bring the Hamer Community Conservation Center to life. Known for delivering

comprehensive construction management services with a strong commitment to safety, quality, and value, Alexander Building has been an active presence on site. Their hands-on approach and collaboration have been instrumental in ensuring the project stays true to its vision while meeting high construction and environmental standards.

The Hamer Community Conservation Center will serve as a hub for a diverse, connected community working toward permanent land and water conservation. ClearWater believes the places where we live, work, and play should be protected and cared for. We’re nurturing a healthy environment and thriving communities in the heart of Pennsylvania.
